Biography
About Joe
Joe Kiefer is a Wisconsin landscape artist whose paintings invite viewers to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience a sense of peace and wonder. Through dramatic light, luminous color, atmospheric effects, and a strong sense of place, he creates artwork that celebrates the beauty of the natural world while offering a welcome escape from the demands of everyday life.
Raised in the small northern Wisconsin village of Glidden, Joe developed a deep appreciation for nature through time spent with his lumberjack and farming relatives. Surrounded by forests, lakes, and open countryside, he discovered a love for both the outdoors and art at an early age. At 14, he began painting with oils and quickly dedicated himself to mastering the craft through years of study and practice.
Joe's path initially led him toward a career in conservation. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, studying wildlife biology and forestry while working on environmental projects. Yet the pull of art proved stronger. He eventually transferred to the University of Wisconsin–Madison to pursue art, refining the painting techniques that would become the foundation of his professional career.
Inspired by time spent observing nature, Joe's paintings often begin as plein air studies created on location. These field sketches serve as the foundation for larger studio works, allowing him to capture both the immediacy of a fleeting moment and the thoughtful design of a carefully developed composition. In the studio, he builds layered surfaces using glazing, scumbling, and palette knife techniques to create depth, movement, and luminous color.
Joe is particularly drawn to quiet moments, shifting light, and atmospheric conditions that transform ordinary landscapes into memorable experiences. Whether depicting a mist-covered river, a sunlit forest path, or the glow of evening light across a field, he seeks to convey not only what a place looks like, but how it feels to be there.
Throughout life's challenges, Joe has found strength, healing, and inspiration through nature, faith, and creative expression. These experiences continue to shape his work today. His paintings are more than representations of beautiful places—they are invitations to pause, reflect, and reconnect with the restorative power of the natural world.
Through his art, Joe hopes to satisfy humanity's enduring need for nature's beauty, wonder, and tranquility. His goal is to create paintings that bring a sense of calm, connection, and inner peace into the homes of collectors, serving as daily reminders of the places and experiences that nourish the human spirit.
